Steamed Fish & Vegetables | “Eating On The Lighter Side Of The Table.”

So you love going to those places that sell steamed fish & vegetables. But unfortunately you don’t always want to spend the money for it. Not sure how to make it at home? Well I have a simple and very easy recipe, and you don’t need a steamer oven to do it!

I don’t know about you guys, but I love fish and vegetables. I also love them steamed, as I am not big on eating fried foods constantly. I see lots of people going out and spending big bucks in those fish markets, or restaurants that specialize in steamed foods.

Speaking of which I just dined in one of those restaurants, and I could have done the same at home. But we shall chat about that a bit later, in another post. If your interested in a very simple steamed fish & vegetable recipe, that you can do at home. Then I have the perfect one just for you.


3-4 Servings

1 – 2 lbs of Shrimp (Fresh or frozen)
2 – 3 Fresh & Skinned Tilapia Filets (Omitted in this recipe)
1 Sliced Turkey Sausage
2 – 3 Fresh Ears Of Corn
2 – 3 Red Or Idaho Potatoes
1 Bunch Of Fresh Broccoli (Omitted in this recipe)
15 Minced Garlic Cloves
1 Cup Of Butter
2 Tablespoons Of Old Bay Seasoning
1 Teaspoon of Crushed Red Peppers
1 Teaspoon of Cayenne Seasoning (Optional)
3 – 4 Springs of Chopped Fresh Parsley

Shell and devain shrimp, rinse with fresh lemon or lime juice. Scrub potatoes and cut into medium sized slices. Wash and trim broccoli stems. Shell, clean, and slice ears of corn.

Now my dears if you are anything like me, 9 times out of 10 you do not own a steamer of any sort (unless it’s for hair). But that should not stop you from steaming your vegetables or seafood. I personally use a collander (rice or vegetable strainer) and a large pot. Which is usually used for stews and soups. I have one that my mom gave me when I moved into my first apartment. And a simple large pot cover.

In this process you want to work in groups. Steam the food that takes longest to cook. Such as the corn, potatoes and sausage. Steam those items, covered for 30 minutes. Remove from heat and place in a foil pan (for easy clean up).

You would then add the items that are quicker to cook such as the fish, shrimp and broccoli. Those items will steam within 10 minutes.

In a frying pan you will take 1/2 of cup of butter and melt it down on a medium fire. You will add the garlic cloves and sauté for 1 minute then add the crushed red peppers. Then you will add the additional butter to pan until melted. Remove from fire.

Sprinkle steamed fish & vegetables with all season, and butter. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve while hot.

Note: You can definitely adjust the amount of seasoning to your liking. And you can also play around with different spices. I usually don’t always use Old Bay seasoning, but that is what I currently had in the cabinet.
